Dragon Egg (ongoing)

Inspired by my love for the A Song of Ice and Fire universe, this project scratches almost all of my creative itches. Starting in Houdini, I procedurally modeled a dragon egg, which I then 3D printed. After cleaning up the print, I used it to create a two-part silicone mold. From there, I cast a resin copy with an Ultracal center to cut resin cost while keeping the weight.

The resin pour gave me a few headaches. On the first attempt, I overcorrected for the cold weather by adding a heater to my shop, which caused thermal runaway and ruined the casting. Thankfully the mold survived, so I got a second try. The pour hole I'd cut in the silicone was also too small, which led to clogging and backup. And because the mold was so large, the tight straps needed during the resin cure warped it slightly, leaving me with a bit of a squished egg. If I did this again, I'd rework the silicone mold's construction to avoid these problems.

Issues aside, I'm moving forward with the latest casting and will start the painting process to bring it to life. Stay tuned!
